“Stay in your lane” is one of the stupider phrases to emerge from lefty identity politics. It’s the crazy idea that certain topics should only be discussed or portrayed by people with the appropriate characteristics. It’s a smothering approach that would set limits on art based on skin color and background when the only limit to art should be the artist’s imagination.
Nobody complained when Saldana dyed her skin green for Guardians of the Galaxy or was rendered as a blue-skinned Navi for Avatar. Let's not forget her having a green-skinned roommate in Star Trek while we're at it.
It seems to me, their extremism will be their undoing (and sadly, they may take us all down with them). They are creating factions among communities which are natural allies. One example is their misogyny - ranging from sexist "Karen jokes" to vicious attacks on J.K. Rowling for gently pointing out that fundamental differences between cis-women and trans-women mean in some cases they cannot be treated the same.
This should concern traditional liberals because the more extreme they get, the more White Supremacists look like an "Equal but Opposite Alternative." Frighteningly, White Supremacists are smarter because they don't attack & alienate their natural allies - they reach out to fundamentalist Christians and Libertarians by highlighting overlaps in beliefs.
Also, the anti-racism tactic of urging everyone to stick to their own tribe is unwittingly helping White Supremacists recruit more moderate Whites. These guys are digging the grave of American Liberalism...
